Albums That Know my Depression

I was thinking this week of the way music helps me manage my moods. I experience depression more than mania which is my preference. I feel like when I’m depressed, that I only hurt myself. Mania has the potential to cause a lot more damage to me and others.

There are two albums that I can recommend if you are feeling depressed.

of Montreal

The first came into my life during a very stressful time. I was in graduate school in Chicago and was miserable. A dream had turned into a nightmare. This was my lowest point of my life and this album just seemed to understand me.

Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? – of Montreal

These songs reflect the sudden onset of depression Kevin Barnes had when he moved to Norway with his family. The songs reflect his struggles with his psyche and moods. I think many people can identify with these sorts of feelings. I certainly do. Here are a few songs from the album. Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse – of Montreal Gronlandic Edit – of Montreal A Sentence Of Sorts In Kongsvinger – of Montreal

The Mountain Goats

The second album that I want to suggest is Transcendental Youth by the Mountain Goats. One of the main themes of the album is mental illness. There are so many songs that resonate with me and it is one of my all time favorites from the band.

Transcendental Youth- The Mountain Goats

Here are a few of my favorite songs. The Diaz Brothers – The Mountain Goats Amy aka Spent Gladiator 1 – The Mountain Goats Cry for Judas – The Mountain Goats

A Single That I also Love

Section 12 (Hold Me Now) – The Polyphonic Spree

Are there any songs or albums that you like to listen to that help you cope? Please share them with me on Twitter @Susan_Silver.
